Longnor Parish Council has initiated a project to provide more parking availability to residents and visitors with electric vehicle charging points.
An area of land adjacent to the B5053 south of the centre of the village has been identified as a possible location for this facility. The Clerk of the Parish Council has been in contact with Staffordshire County Council regarding this proposed project and a record of communications is included at the foot of this web-page.
The Clerk to the Parish Council has informed Staffordshire County Council that the basic design principles of this project are;
NOT to remove or damage any trees or wild plant habitats
NOT to pave over any grassed areas to allow free drainage as it is now (As well as saving existing “green life”, this requirement has the added advantage of there being no costs in purchasing and laying paving, concrete and drains).
TO provide electric vehicle charging points which can be used by residents and visitors and paid for using credit/debit cards at the time of use.
TO increase the power available to the locality for charging electric vehicles.
TO make access and egress onto the B5053 safe by ensuring all vehicles drive on and off the area facing forward.
TO prevent random, half on the verge, half on the road, parking between the crossroads and the Manifold Bridge on the B5053. This practice is a regular weekend hazard now.
TO discourage pedestrians from roaming along the B5053 and encourage them to use the existing footpath from the Charging/Parking Area directly onto the High Street. This footpath has no vehicle access and is a much safer proposition for the occupants of the vehicles to go into Longnor Village.
The Clerk to the Parish Council proposes the use of raised, rotating platforms constructed of galvanised steel grids that the vehicles drive onto up a short ramp. The vehicles are then charged up and the rotating platform turns the vehicle to face back towards the B5053 enabling the driver to leave the area forward, and so more safely that reversing out, onto that length of the road with fast moving traffic. (We would also like to see an extension of the 30mph limit but that can take some time for all the necessary legal procedures to be completed – we do not want that to delay the project).
The raised, see through, rain through platforms would mean that no wild plant habitat would be lost. No existing trees would need to be removed, only perhaps branches trimmed to ensure clear visibility when driving out and back onto the B5053.
There would need to be a modest building to house electricity paypoints and electrical switchgear but this is going to be necessary soon to provide the electrical charging capacity as residents change from fossil fuel powered vehicles to electric vehicles over the next few years. It is probably necessary to engage with Western Power Distribution to ensure that there is sufficient power capacity coming into the village to provide electric charging to replace fossil fuel usage. It will certainly be necessary to engage with the Peak Park Planning Authority to ensure that the future needs of the residents of the Village are not compromised by any historical constraints imposed before the imperatives of tackling climate change became so critical to us all.
